A Suggested Diamond Appraisal
for Diamond Buyers |
Mark Bunda
specializes in assisting clients buy the perfect diamond engagement ring.
Clients want good size, color, clarity and cut for the least money. So it
is up to a good appraiser to determine what is the best mix for their
client. He does not sell diamonds in the
engagement ring market. He also does not refer clients to sellers of Diamonds. The
diamond engagement ring market is extremely competitive up to a point. If a client
wishes to make a good diamond purchase, they need to know the relative
quality of the diamond they are contemplating and it's market value. |

Inquiries & Appointments |
1. Verification
of the diamond against the GIA or EGL certificate for ID purposes. Mark
specifically states what should be on the certificate while the client
initially does not show the certificate to Mark. This proves to the client
that the diamond and the certificate match. |
2. Discussion
of the overall attractiveness of the diamond combining Mark’s visual
observations regarding cut, color & clarity with certificate data.
Although we respect the information in a Sarin report we do not produce
them because we feel they are superfluous in appraising a diamond which
already has a GIA or EGL certificate. Sarin is an excellent tool
diamond cutters use when cutting diamonds to ideal proportions. If your
diamond has a Sarin report we will use it, but it is not necessary to
determine whether the diamond is attractive or not. There is sufficient
certified & visual information already available. The basic requirements
for an attractive diamond are a good table and depth % combined with good
symmetry. A problem occurs when color and clarity are not as good as
stated on the certificate which can happen sometimes because they color &
clarity are subjective calls or, in a few cases seen so far, they are
mistakes. Fluorescence also has to be dealt with which can be a good or
bad thing depending on the overall body color. Then there are other things
like extra facets or pushing a stone up to an ideal weight, etc. |
3. Specifically stating how much
such a diamond (as verified & discussed above) can be purchased for in
the appropriate marketplace. Mark will not ask the client how much they
are contemplating paying for their selected diamond. This way the client
will have an indication if they are getting good value for money in their diamond
purchase. With regards to Rapaport and % off list, there are sub markets within the diamond
engagement ring market where particular diamonds command higher values than others and vica-verca.
Where one particular diamond may represent good value at -5% of list
another diamond may only represent good value at -25% of Rapaport. |

4. And finally, if the you decide to proceed with your diamond purchase,
an adequate insurance coverage is discussed and a Certified USPAP Retail
Replacement Appraisal for Insurance Purposes is then produced. |
The average
consultation/appraisal will cost between $150 and $250 pro-rated at $50
per 15 minutes. Based on current appraising for clients, approximately 65%
of diamond consultations make it through Step 4. About 3-5% do not pass
Step 1. 30-32% do not meet the adequate criteria of Steps 2 & 3. In these
cases, the time taken (and cost) is less.
